Southern Utah Senior Photographer - Las Vegas WPPI Photoshoot

At WPPI I went to a small photo shoot and took photos of this beautiful girl. It was fun to photograph her on the strip at Las Vegas. We had so many people come up to our group of about ten photographers asking if this girl was famous. The importance of art

I just wanted to share a little bit of my thoughts on photography as an art. Photography is an expression of art. All photographers have their own style. Some are struggling to find their own style but they find it in time. I know that my style is getting more refined every day.

For me, I feel like my style is more "real". I try not to overly edit (which I admit I've done in the past - I look back now at those edits and are embarrassed by them, but I was learning). I try to keep images clean and fresh looking. One of my main reasons for doing this is to preserve these images in their reality. I'm not super trendy and I don't have a huge fashion sense.. my taste for clothing is very simple and clean. I want my photography to reflect that. I want my clients to be able to look back at their photos from me and not feel embarrassed by the "old school", "ghetto", or "2010" look of their photos. My goal is to have these photos last through time. I want these photos to be able to last very long on my client's walls. I don't want to be laughable in the future because of the silly props I used or even editing I used. That is why I go for a clean, fresh, real look in my photos.

Photography is super important to me. It is my passion. I love to capture faces. Real faces. And true personalities. Before I became a photographer I was lucky to have the importance of photographs instilled within me. When I got married I told my parents that I wanted a certain photographer because he reflected the clean, fresh style that I am drawn to, but also because he knew what he was doing and had a track record of successful photographs. He was over $2000 dollars. And well worth it. That is the ONLY thing I specifically asked for in my wedding planning: great photography. I got it (I have awesome parents!). And I love my results and quality I received from those photographs.

Please don't skimp on your photographs. Don't put them off because it's too expensive. It. is. worth. it. I promise. You won't regret it.

Southern Utah Winter Landscapes

It snowed overnight here in Southern Utah. I took the opportunity to get out and take some photographs of the beautiful red mountains and snow. I wouldn't categorize myself as a landscape photographer, so these are just for fun.

I have a few more to upload but the coloring is being messed up when I upload so I'll have to try that later.

As I was driving up the road back towards town I thought the power lines looked so neat, so I grabbed my camera in the seat next to me and snapped this real quick :)

Happy Valentines Day

I'm not doing very well on my New Year's goal to consistently put content on this blog. I've made some goals for myself, one of which is two participate in the iheartfaces photo challenges. This week's theme was "hearts". I don't think I will be entering the challenge, but I still took the photos. I had this idea to draw with chalk a heart on the wood fence and cement wall in my backyard, and then take a portrait of my son with the heart blurred in the background. The first image is basically what I had in mind (except I didn't want to be in it). I had to have my husband take it because I couldn't focus by myself. My son didn't want to be cooperate so this was the best I could muster.

This edit is slightly different than the first. I need more subjects to photograph other than myself!

So there it is.. my attempt at "hearts" this week.

This month for the SUPG meeting, we had a theme to bring a "silhouette" photo. I don't take many silhouettes. I don't love them. I searched for anything worthy to bring to the meeting and the only thing I liked was the photo posted below. I didn't get it printed to bring to the meeting..

This photo is special and has a memory for me. We were working on our house and it had began to rain and storm outside. Dayten (my son) was out of patience that day and so I sat him on the windowsill to watch the rain and listen for the thunder. He loved it. I loved that he loved it. Every time he would hear thunder he would gasp loudly and his eyes would get wide.

Every photo has a memory.

I'm excited to say that I am going to WPPI this year!! Holy moly I'm so stoked!

Last year, I remember reading my favorite photography blogs and seeing all of the fun pictures that everyone posted about the fun they had at WPPI. I remember this post in particular.

Well now this year, that will be me! AH! I will be going with 4 other women in the Southern Utah Photography Guild and it's going to be a blast. I need some motivation and instruction on how to better myself as a photographer and get my business rolling!

Photo Cards

I absolutely love to design. Just ask my husband. When I get involved in a project, I'm in the "zone" and can create for hours. Yesterday I got a call from a family member asking me if I could quickly design something for a baby shower she is throwing. Here is what I whipped up in about an hour:

She ended up choosing the second one. Which I like a little better. They are both turned out great.

So ya! I just wanted to share and let you know that I can do custom photo card design for whatever occasion you can think of! I also have a high quality print lab that I work with that offers photo cards on high quality durable photo paper, so it's not just a print.

I have taken graphic design courses the last year and I've learned a lot about printing and design. I use Adobe Illustrator to design these vector cards.

Mini Session: Addie

I love this little girl. I've had the privilege of photographing her 3 times since she has been born! She is so cute and so full of curious energy. Plus her middle name is my first name, so we have a lot in common :) We had a fun and crazy photo shoot. Here are a few of my favorites:

This bottom image is something I did new. I used a green screen and digitally entered the background. I added the black and created a reflection of her image. Is it weird? I think it turned out pretty good!

Moon

A bunch of my fellow photogs from the Southern Utah Photograph Guild took photos of the moon the last couple of nights. I tried it out. Here is my shot of the moon. I did't get as zoomed in as I'd liked.. but still rad! I think I needed to take a picture of it when it was first coming up in the night. I waited until later in the night, which meant it was smaller because it was farther away. Thoughts?

Mini-Session Skylee and Jaston

So it wasn't quite a "mini-session". When the kids came over, I couldn't stop pushing down that shutter! During this session, I learned the power of reverse-psychology.

For example Skylee and Jaston's mom had to say "Don't you dare smile!" and of course a huge, REAL grin appeared. Or she would say, "Don't stand right here! I do not want you to stand right here." Their immediate action was to go right to the spot they were told not to, and smile. It was awesome. I'm definitely going to be using those tactics in the future!

What I love most about the above photos? It shows the kids' true personalities. And that right there, is priceless.

Heritage Days - A Desert to a Dream photos

I am apart of the Southern Utah Photography Guild. We have monthly meetings and at each of those meetings we have a theme and are supposed to bring a printed image that is relative to that specific theme. I was able to go to my first meeting a few days ago. I didn't have even time to print but I was looking through my photos, I think I would have decided on this one for the theme of "Reflections":

Happy New Years!!!

This year my goal/resolution is to grow and market Teria Photography so that I can get at least 2 photoshoots a month. I also want to blog 4 times a week. It's a lot for me to blog that much, but I think it will push me to take more photographs and expand my business. So here's to more blogging!

I'm doing mini-photoshoots for the month of January, like I've mentioned before, so that I can play and learn the studio side of photography. This morning I did my first mini-session with Skylee and Jaston. They are such adorable kids!

Google Chrome is being STUPID right now and when I post photos, they look horrible and dull, but look just fine in Mozilla Firefox. I don't know what's wrong so here is a sneak peak of Mr. Jaston on my facebook page. His pose reminds me a model for Abercrombie kids or Gap kids or something like that. More photos to come in a few days :)

I'm super excited because I received some studio equipment with backdrops for Christmas. I am dying to use them!

I'd like to offer $25 mini-sessions so that I can practice and try out my new stuff :)

The $25 includes: the session fee, and a CD/DVD of images of LOW resolution images with the Teria Photography watermark on it for web use.

SUPG Creative Photoshoot

I am so excited to be apart of the Southern Utah Photography Guild! I think I will learn a lot being apart of this group and I will be able to help out the community at the same time. There are some incredible photographers in this group!

Last Saturday we did a creative photoshoot together with a bunch of beautiful models. Below is Kevin showing us a shot he took.

It was super super super cold and windy that day. I HATE the cold. But I love photography so I endured it the best I could.

Here is a couple of models and Randi. We got to the top of this hill and the wind killed us!

Despite the cold temps and wind, I was able to capture some awesome shots:

I was drawn to this model. I loved her red hat and contrasting black shirt. Plus she is gorgeous and had the most beautiful eyes.

I've had such a blast going through and editing the photos from this photo session. I showed a sneak peek last week, and here are a few more of my favorites our of them all.

My goal is to become more involved in children, babies, and newborns. I want to set up a home studio with some adorable backdrops. I love the idea of having a home studio because I feel more in control over the lighting and overall atmosphere of the session. More control = Better photos!

I've been inspired.

I have access to this super cute backdrop and flooring that I just had to use while I had it!

I invited my good friend and her girls to come over and have a studio-style portrait photo session in my home. What a blast we had and I'm so excited about how the photos turned out.

Yesterday morning, my son and I had a wonderful time together taking photographs.

My husband was at work and I had gotten some really fun backdrops to play around with.

I set them up and started snapping away at my adorable son.

The above photo, Dayten was jumping from a chair onto these pillows. His smile makes me melt :)

This backdrop obviously needed to be ironed over or something.. but still cute.

I had a friend approach me that was doing a catalog design for her graphic design degree. She has amazing talent and I was super excited to help her out with the photos for the catalog. We got a couple of her friends to be models and went out and had a handbag-style photo-shoot!

Watching Water Fall

My brother is quite talented. He has created a band Watching Water Fall and is recording his own album! All (nearly) by himself. He has wanted to take some photos and had some ideas of his own..so here is what we came up with:

I have to say that this photo shoot was adventurous! We wanted to go to a bridge and the river. I packed up my bike and kid trailer complete with kid, drum, glockenspiel, etc. and we were off!

Tyson took these while we were riding out to the location.

Tyson had the vision of hanging off the bridge. Awesome.

Behind the Scenes

Behind the scenes at the Snow Canyon Dance Companies photo shoot!
Wow what a blast this photo shoot was! 26 beautiful and talented girls! I was an assistant shooter for my good friend Randi at R. Gardner Photographs.

I assisted in taking portraits of the girls and loved every minute of it, even though my arms were super sore. Earlier in the day I had done a workout with my husband, rode my bike a couple miles, shoveled rocks for our front yard landscape, and then held a 10 pound camera at this photo shoot for almost 3 hours. I was not very smart! But it's all good, I survived happily :)

I just wanted to post some of the behind the scenes photographs I captured that afternoon. As you can see, we all had a lot of fun and hopefully we'll see them again next year!

Thanks Randi for letting me be apart of this! And thanks to Randi's husband Trenton for his help too! He was fantastic!

Jude's 1st Birthday

A couple weekends ago, I was able to photograph for my cousin's son's birthday. She also is a photographer! We spent a lot of time together that weekend (more to come on that) and got to know each other better. Her little boy turned one and I just had a blast photographing the party. Randi did a wonderful job decorating and planning this thing. I feel so grateful to have been apart of that fun day with them. Happy Birthday Jude!!

Addison is One!

Addison is One!

I can hardly believe it's been a year since I've seen this sweet little one at her newborn photo session.

Her mom had the wonderful idea of having this one year photo shoot at the Carousel. Genius!

What a fun time I had doing this session. I was chasing her all over the place since she is a new walker!

Part two of the session we had a cake smash! I've only professionally photographed one other cake smash and it was a blast. I literally could not stop smiling when I was editing these photos. Addie was so cute and wanted mostly just the m&m's, as you can see in the photo below.

It was very difficult for me to choose just one photo because my family and I are constantly in the water during the summers. So you can imagine how many "water" photos I have.

This is a sweet photo I captured of my son. There is just something about the expression on his face that is so sweet and pure, I had to choose this photo for the challenge.

Christensen Family

Newborn Session: Lucas

One of my favorite subjects to photograph are newborns. I love being around newborns anyways, but it is even better when I have a camera :)
I had the wonderful opportunity to meet the Garcia family and photograph their newborn son, Lucas. We had a tough time getting him to shut his eyes, but overall, the photos turned out great! I am really liking his eyes open because his eyes have so much depth and innocence and new life in them.

I've been wanting to update my "about me" photo on my website. I don't get many pictures taken of myself, because I'm usually the one behind the camera! Go figure.
Last night, my family and I were in Springdale (near Zions National Park) for a concert and I seized a short opportunity to take a mini photoshoot with my brother before the concert. He has a photographic eye and I love the photos he helped take of myself.

I cannot even begin to explain how much this family means to me and my family.
This is my husband's boss' family. We have become great friends since Mike started working and managing Anytime Fitness over a year ago. Sara has been absolutely wonderful and a great friend to me. The Riding Family Children

A good friend of mine just had her third child. A baby girl. She wanted some updated photos of her children and some with the new baby. We made a little studio set-up in her kitchen and had fun taking photos! Thank goodness for Calvin and Hobbes because their comics really helped the children show off some genuine smiles :)

Snow Family

I'm a little behind getting these posted..a month behind.
This is my family on my mothers side! All of us. We may be small but we are family!
I love the Snow side. We have so much history. I could talk alll about it but maybe another time.

My immediate family:

My Uncle & Aunt and the only 2 cousins I have on the Snow Family side.

My mother's immediate family:

We took these up at the airport right after Christmas.
The airport has A LOT of history for us.
My mom used to live up there as a kid.
And she could have sworn she saw Rudolf the Red-Nosed reindeer one Christmas Eve night up on the airport mesa.
My grandpa was one of the original SkyWest pilots and flew for many years before he retired awhile back. I got the privilege of being able to be a passenger on his last flight.
My grandpa used to work for SkyWest, his wife, Kathy works at SkyWest, my mom works at SkyWest, and I have also worked there. So it only seemed appropriate that we took photos up there before this airport would be no more.
It's a little sad.. but I'm proud that I got to be apart of it's history.

Bridal Session: Kelsi and Emil

Zion's Waterfalls

My mom called me yesterday and wanted to go see the waterfalls at Zions National Park. We left and we are so glad we went. It was incredible and so beautiful. There were so many waterfalls. We were only able to go through the scenic route. The road through Zions were all closed. I just heard that all of Zions is now completely closed!

This waterfall was at the end of the scenic route and the biggest of all. The sound of it was incredible. When it almost reached the end it turned to mist and it was SO wet! I couldn't believe how much water was flowing out.

I am an avid reader of the blog Go4Pro. They are doing a contest about the "About Me" section of a photographers website. I decided to go for it because the prizes are just too amazing not to want.
My husband took this photo of me. I like this photo because it shows my personality. Yeah, I'm just sitting there smiling, but I look friendly and genuine. Isn't that what you would want in a photographer? I also look laid back and down to earth (literally! ha!). I know how it feels to be in front of the camera, and I want my clients and potential clients to know that it doesn't have to be a stress fest to get your pictures taken. It should be rewarding and enjoyable.

I will probably update my "About Me" page regularly with new photos of myself. It's always fun to see myself in a photo for once :)

I bought a new lens for my camera. My kit lens was just not doing it for me. I played around with my new lens the other day after I finished decorating our freshly cut tree. Wow what a difference it made! I was able to do a family photo shoot Saturday with the new lens and am so excited to share in a few days!

Yet again, photos of my family! These are unique however, because I got to use a friend of mine's amazing, incredible camera equipment. Don't get me wrong, I love my camera and the accessories that I have gotten thus far, but wow what a difference upper high-quality equipment makes on photographs.

I always am in heaven when I get to take photographs, no matter what the subject is. This was no different with my own family. We even got my son to cooperate for a little while. You may be able to tell he was a little grumpy in some pictures.

My Family Photos

Last weekend my little family went up to Pine Valley, UT to enjoy some peace and quiet. I've been wanting to take some family photos for awhile so this was a perfect time to do so. Pine Valley is becoming so beautiful with the color change of autumn. The weather was so nice and crisp. I was in heaven because I got to take pictures of my family! Pine Valley has SOOO many different and wonderful spots to take pictures.

My son, Dayten, was very cooperative. Which was very surprising!

On the way home, the sunset was stunning. I had my husband pull over for me to take advantage of the beautiful sky.

A couple of months ago, I wanted to properly light my "subjects" and Mike helped me build my own lightbox. Yesterday was my husband's birthday and we bought a cake and I couldn't resist not taking pictures of it. I can try and use them for my istock! So I got my lightbox and took these:

This past week I had the opportunity to do my first corporate/company photos! I'm really excited about them. I'm still in the process of doing final touches, but I wanted to show off this awesome shot I got of my hubby! He is so great because he usually comes to most of my photo shoots and helps me out with lighting and things. This time, he got to be a "model" in the shots because this particular company (St George Massage) wanted some action photos. Mike was sure not complaining!

Stock Photography

In May, Mike and I had the opportunity to do some modeling for a bunch of photographers that do stock photography for an online stock company called istockphoto.com. I started looking into the website myself and thought, "hey! I can do this. Why not give it a try?" I am learning that stock photography is a lot harder than it looks. istockphoto.com is very picky about quality. Which is good. But it's making me learn and practice my own photography to be even better. I have attached some of the shots we received from our own modeling we did in May. We got to be the "beach" couple out at Sand Hallow Reservoir. It was a really fun and interesting experience. Especially for me, watching and learning from other photographers. My last picture is a photo I took yesterday for my istock profile. It's been really fun to try and figure out what to take pictures of and then how to light/organize/execute that photo. As part of my "photo of the day" series, I will add some of my own stock photography shots.

Didn't mike do such a wonderful thumb modeling? haha.
